Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, the microbes in compost tea need water just as much as we do! It not only offers a source of hydration but it also helps the microbes get deeper into the soil so they can begin their work! We recommend watering before a compost tea application.
Rain is totally okay, so long as it isnβt raining heavily. We apply the compost tea to the leaf surfaces of the plant because plants can uptake nutrients through their leaf pores. If itβs raining heavily this could impact the plantβs ability to absorb these nutrients. We typically wait until the rain passes to continue, or will schedule the spray on another day if itβs forecasted to rain for an extended period of time.
Compost tea creates a favorable environment for the desired plants to grow healthfully. This enables these desired plants to outcompete the undesired weeds that may be present, and prevent them from coming back.
As mentioned above, compost tea creates a favorable environment for desired plants to grow healthfully. When it comes to pests and pathogens, compost tea creates a welcoming environment and a food source for beneficial insects that feed upon pests. With pathogens itβs the same! For example, powdery mildew is a foliar fungus that covers the leaf surface and steals energy and food from the plant for itself. When compost tea is applied to the leaf surface, we are inoculating a beneficial species of fungi to outcompete this bad species. This creates an environment on the leaf surface where the powdery mildew canβt survive. This could take several applications or a few; it depends on the prevalence of these pests and pathogens present.
Compost tea is not a quick fix! We believe all great things take time! It depends on what results you are looking for; greater yield with vegetables and fruit in your garden, healthier plants, improvement in lawn/turf, treatment of pests and pathogens, successful implementation of new plants in landscaping, etc. Some clients have seen results after one spray, some after a full season of sprays, and some after a few seasons of spray applications. It is completely contingent upon how βsickβ the plants are, how strong the prevalence of the pest/pathogen is, if you have a pre-existing population of beneficial microbes present in your soil, etc. We are happy to come up with a specialized plan to get your plants back on track and looking their best!
Yes it sure will! Our sprayer has the ability to fine-tune the spray so that the application will reach the soil. But if you are not choosing to remove the leaves, compost tea will assist in their degradation which offers even more nutrients for your soil!
